How Much Does a Will Cost in Louisiana?

How much does a will cost in Louisiana? There is no statewide price. The fee depends on what the will needs to accomplish and whether it is prepared by an attorney or written without professional assistance.

At Field Law, estate-planning fees are quoted in advance. That allows clients to understand the cost before deciding how to proceed.

What Affects the Cost of a Louisiana Will?

A straightforward will generally costs less than a plan involving:

  • Minor children or trusts for young beneficiaries
  • A blended family
  • Forced heirs
  • A person the client wants to exclude
  • Business interests
  • Multiple properties
  • Usufruct or naked ownership
  • Detailed instructions for particular assets

A married couple may also need coordinated wills rather than two unrelated documents.

The value of the estate is not the only consideration. A person with modest property may still need careful planning to name a guardian, protect a minor child or ensure that a spouse receives separate property.

Can You Make a Will Without Paying an Attorney?

Louisiana recognizes an olographic testament written entirely in the testator’s handwriting. It does not require a notary or witnesses. Although an olographic will may cost nothing to write, unclear language or execution errors can create expense for the family later.

Louisiana also recognizes a notarial testament. Under Civil Code Article 1576, it must be written, dated, executed before a notary in the presence of two witnesses and signed by the required parties.

An attorney-prepared will includes more than typing a document. The attorney should evaluate Louisiana inheritance law, identify potential problems, draft provisions that fit the client’s goals and supervise proper execution.

Our article about do-it-yourself Louisiana wills explains some of the risks of preparing one without legal guidance.

Is a Will the Same as a Complete Estate Plan?

No. A will controls certain property after death. It does not authorize someone to manage your finances or make medical decisions during incapacity.

A complete estate plan may also include a financial mandate, health care power of attorney, living will or trust. Those additional documents affect the total cost, but they address problems that a will alone cannot solve.

Field Law uses transparent fixed fees for estate planning so clients know what their chosen plan includes and what it will cost.
